The Friday Five: Bolivia, Canon, Assault, Diversity, and Titles

by Chris Case January 18, 2018January 20, 2018

Every Friday, I want to share some articles from the week that I find interesting, helpful, or just downright weird. From media to theology, current events to history, nothing is off the table. Here’s this week’s five:

Bolivia Makes Evangelism a Crime

In ‘news you may have missed’, a rare move for Latin America happened recently. Bolivia, one of the poorest and pseudo-socialist countries, voted on a new penal code that would punish evangelism.

A Thorough Guide to the Non-Canonical Gospels

Most people have a vague notion of the ‘other Gospels’ and letters that were around in the first handful of centuries in the church. I interact with non-Christian often who try to throw those at me as arguments to not believe in the Bible. But with a little research, anyone can defend why these books are bogus.

Jesus Doesn’t Give a Standing Ovation to Sexual Assault

I’ve been puzzled and wanting to write about this issue over the past week, but Stephen Altrogge said all the things I wanted to say. The church must deal with sin. I understand the desire for restoration and forgiveness because they are essential to the Gospel, but the details of this story just don’t line up with it.

Is Diversity Important In the Church?

A great read from Trillia Newbell, and timely for the MLK holiday. She states, “The church’s pursuit of diversity reflects the Bible’s description of the kingdom.” Of many articles this week I could have posted on the subject, this one stood out to me.

On Leading Without a Title

I am often surprised at some people who don’t want to lead until given a title and I’m most impressed by those who lead who are not waiting for a title. This article is divided into three main points: 1.) Everyone has a title 2.) no one’s title makes them a leader, and 3.) anyone can be a leader no matter what their title.

Drug Ads & Prosperity Preachers

by Chris Case January 16, 2018January 16, 2018

Drug advertisements have undergone tremendous criticism and scrutiny through the years. In 1997, the FDA started requiring the Pharmaceutical companies to include the major side effects associated with the drug in the advertisement.

Even though the side effects can include some fairly dire effects, including death, drugs still sell. Marketing works. But why?

Trust and The Shepherd

by Chris Case January 15, 2018January 16, 2018

Trust in experts and authority figures has taken a beating in the past decade. This is an ongoing cultural shift. This only becomes more significant when dealing with issues of morality and ethics, and church leaders bear the brunt of this shift. One Duke professor examines that most believe the individual conscience has a greater ability to determine sound ethical answers than do churches. This distrust has caused 60% of millennials to be politically independent.1

With the changing culture, the church isn’t doing itself any favors.

Knowing the Word

by Chris Case January 11, 2018January 16, 2018

How many times has your New Year’s resolution been to know more Scripture? Most of us set a course to read the Bible in a year or some other Bible reading plan.

But do you make a plan to memorize Scripture as well? If you have, how has that gone? I’ll admit I’ve set the course to memorize before, but often the coffee-cup verses that so often are taken out of context. Or maybe to memorize a short book like 1 John. But I want to set out for success.
